27 years! That is how long the Honda Celebration of Light has been performing annually in Vancouver, BC. The first Honda Celebration of Light was held from July 25th to August 5th, 1990. When I heard that I was shocked that my family had never made out way down to see the performances. I guess I had always been a little hesitant because I perceived that the crowds would have been insane.
Let me set the record straight, there are quite a number of people that head to the Honda Celebration of Lights, but the City does an amazing job at crowd control so everything ran smoothly when we headed down.
We attended the August 2nd UK performance this year which was a Wednesday night. Apparently, the Wednesday night had lighter than normal crowds at approximately 200,000 attendees from what I heard broadcasted.
There are a ton of options for seeing the fireworks from the traditional, grabbing a blanket and sitting on the beach to the option we chose of the YVR Observation Deck which gave us reserved seating in bleachers right in front of the barge where the fireworks are set off of.
Before the show, The Fab Four Beatles Tribute Band was playing and they were spectacular. They created an awesome family, friendly environment that got everyone in the mood for a night of entertainment. If you love The Beatles and ever get a chance to check out The Fab Four Tribute Band, then I highly recommend it.
If you are looking for snacks or dinner before the fireworks, the road above the beach is lined with food trucks. You can get everything from fresh squeezed lemonade, kettle corn, hot dogs, poutine, and more.
Between the food trucks, live band, and the crowd, you definitely feel like you are at a festival. The environment is family friendly. There were police everywhere along with volunteers, firefighters, paramedics, and even the police on horseback which everyone loved seeing and the cameras came out every time they went by.
The Honda Celebration of Light was spectacular and will become a yearly, traditional family event for us.
