Over the last few months we have had the opportunity to learn about money with our children by using the Moonjar. What is a Moonjar? It is a wonderful way to teach your children how to save money, share money (helping others), and allotting how much money goes to spending.
My youngest who is only 4 has already learned about dividing money when she receives it between the three jars that make up the Moonjar. The green tin is for spending, the red tin is for sharing and the blue tin is for saving.
When my little one gets money we go and divide it between the three jars and she understands that when she wants to spend money she goes to the green tin and that is what she can spend. The money in the blue tin gets taken into the bank and put in her back account. The money in the red tin we use to either buy presents for friends or to use for donations.
This little tin has been an amazing teaching tool for my 4 year old. At such a young age she is getting a concept of money and allocating it to different areas.
The only thing I would say about the Moonjar is I think the colors should be a little different. Green to me means money and a positive balance for money and should be the savings tin. Red means in the hole or money you don’t really have and that to me should be associated to spending. Sharing should be a happy color as it is the tin we go to for making others happy with a donation or a gift.
Because of the way I associate the colors of the tins in relation to money, I go to get the wrong tin every time for the wrong thing and my little one has to correct me. Of course the colors of the tins is not an issue, it is just an aside. The use of the tins are perfect the way they are.
For businesses such as banks, I think this would be the perfect item to give out as a promotional item for when a little one opens a bank account. Moonjar will even customize the cardboard Moonjars for businesses so it really is a perfect promotional tool.
There is also a Classroom Kit that is perfect for Kindergarten to Grade 5.
