Registration for spring and summer camps at Vancouver Aquarium are now open and there’s no shortage of unique, engaging programs to keep budding ocean champions engaged and learning outside their usual classroom.
JUNIOR BIOLOGIST CLUB
The Junior Biologist Clubs are weekend sessions where children (groups are 7-9 and 10-12) get to explore the animals, science, and research that happen behind the scenes at the Vancouver Aquarium and in ocean science research. Each individual date goes towards earning a recognition badge. Each badge is earned after attending three dates, and there are seven levels in total.
· The April theme is Go with the Flow: Rivers, oceans, and lakes, oh my! Discover how the water cycle renews and cleans the water flowing in watersheds, which are relied on heavily by humans, animals, and plants alike! Also, explore the salmon life cycle, and learn how to predict where salmon live in the watershed at each stage of their life cycle.
· The May theme is Coastal Creatures: Have you ever noticed how a beach changes throughout the day? High and low tides change the environment for many plants and animals living in these tidal zones. Join us in exploring our B.C. coast with a beach walk, where participants will discover the local intertidal creatures and discuss some of the challenges of living in a tidal zone.
AQUACAMPS
AquaCamps offer children unforgettable experiences to get up-close with nature while learning about our oceans and having fun. Activities include arts and crafts, time outside at the beach and interactions with sea critters in the Wet Lab. Education doesn’t have to stop when school breaks for summer, and this is one fun way to keep it going! Camps are a week long and run the weeks of July 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th, August 7, 13, 20 and 27. For more details, visit this page.
YOUTH ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERS CLUB
Youth Environmental Leaders Programs (YELP) take the camp experience to a new level and are aimed at young teens. Youth participants will be fully immersed in conservation and sustainability workshops led by Vancouver Aquarium educators, experts, and scientists. A variety of daily topics, hands-on experiments and guest speakers will allow participants to explore the effects of their everyday behaviour on the environment and those we share it with. For more info, see here.
