College life has got to be one of the most memorable times in someone’s life. Many would say that college is a time to experience freedom and independence, as this is the time when most teens move out of their homes and live in a dorm. Aside from getting an education, college life is also a time for many students to discover more about themselves.
While each and every person’s college journey is unique, there’s no denying that along with the great experiences in college, there are also some rough patches here and there. While there are students who adapt right away to college life, there are also many who become overwhelmed with all the changes that college life brings. Read through the list below for some of the things that most college students deal with it throughout their time of studying.
1. Peer pressure – it’s easier to start a new journey in life when you have friends on the journey with you. More often than not in college, most students need to find new friends while dealing with a new environment. It is but normal to want to fit in with a group of people, but students seem to think that they need to change themselves in order to gain new friends. Peer pressure is something that all college students might experience. Although there are positive forms of peer pressure, such as joining a sports club or being encouraged to be better with your schooling, there is also peer pressure that will have students do things that are not beneficial for them. Know that you don’t need to succumb to things that you do not want to do just to be accepted, and you can find friends who will accept you for who you are.
2. Mental health – due to the pressure of studies, many college students experience a variety of mental health problems throughout their college life. One of the most common is anxiety. Although it is normal to go through anxiety once in awhile, especially before, during and after examinations, it becomes a problem when because of too much anxiety, a student is no longer able to function normally. It may come to a point that students may even experience panic attacks. Another mental health problem that students might go through is depression. This may be because of all pressure of college life, from studies to peer pressure. It’s important in times like these that you get to speak to a counselor who can advise you on what steps to take when you feel like slipping into depression.
3. Alcohol addiction – there are studies reported that claim that during college, the risk of getting addicted to a substance is higher. One of these is alcohol addiction. While there is nothing wrong with drinking during social functions, some become addicted it and it becomes something they can no longer control. In times like this, it is important to get alcohol addiction help. This kind of self-destructive path must be stopped as early as possible as it can really affect your life even when you are no longer in college.
