Ten Thousand Villages

December 7, 2014 By MomMomOnTheGo

MomMomOnTheGo recently came across Ten Thousand Villages.

What is Ten Thousand Villages?

Ten Thousand Villages is the oldest and largest Fair Trade organization in North America, selling artisan-crafted personal accessories, home decor and gift items from around the globe.

Ten Thousand Villages is a member of the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO), a coalition of handicraft and agricultural producer organizations, and Fair Trade organizations from both the North and the South.

Our Mission Statement

Ten Thousand Villages creates opportunities for artisans in developing countries to earn income by bringing their products and stories to our markets through long-term, fair trading relationships.

So MomMomOnTheGo has two products from Ten Thousand Villages. The first is a pair of Dangling Leaves Earrings.

Dangling Leaves Earrings Ten Thousand Villages Canada

Delicate leaves shaped from hammered brass swing inside brass ovals. Handcrafted hook earrings from the jewelry artisans of Bombolulu Workshops in Mombasa, Kenya.

Located near Mombasa, Kenya’s second largest city, Bombolulu provides employment and numerous other benefits to adults who are blind or physically disabled and who would otherwise have virtually no chance of employment in the mainstream labour market. Bombolulu began as a rehabilitation project sponsored by the Association for the Physically Disabled of Kenya. Benefits provided through Bombolulu include health care, assistance with school fees, retirement benefits, trade union membership and a secure monthly income. The workers have formed their own savings and loan co-operative enabling them to borrow money whenever they need it. What once began as a charitable project has now become a self-sustaining enterprise.

The brass earrings are beautiful and very well made. They are attractive when on and I love the leaf within the frame aspect of them.

The other item that we have is the Garden Paisley Infinity Scarf.

Garden Paisley Infinity Scarf Ten Thousand Villages Canada

A vibrant lightweight scarf in a summer splash of red, burgundy and green. This infinity or circle scarf is stylish and easy to wear. Just loop it and go!

Asha, which means “hope” in Sanskrit, was started by professionals responding to the abject poverty of artisans, the problem of exploitative middlemen, and the disappearance of many traditional crafts. Asha’s work has encouraged the growth of cottage industries, assisting once-impoverished individuals and families towards self-sufficiency. Today, Asha works with over 6,500 artisans in India. Benefits to artisans include marketing, design consultancy, product development, advances, interest-free loans, savings programs, medical care, and educational scholarships, uniforms, and books for children. Training is given at the local level on such issues as AIDS, family planning, addictions, domestic violence and gender discrimination, as well as seminars related to business management skills. Asha empowers women by promoting products made by women and women also hold positions of authority and responsibility within the organization.

The Garden Paisley Infinity Scarf is made out of polyester and it is beautiful. I love the color mixtures and the flexibility of ways to wear it as it is an infinity scarf. You can double loop it over your neck or circle and loop it through itself. This is an awesome and absolutely beautiful product.

I gave my Garden Paisley Infinity Scarf to my mom and she loves it. She also looks amazing in it.
