Barron’s – Train Your Brain

January 13, 2015 By MomMomOnTheGo

Sometimes I find after the long holiday breaks such as summer holidays and the more recent Christmas Break, that it takes a bit for us all to get back into the swing of things. The area we often find the hardest to get back on track with is our homework and our learning goals.

I always try and tackle the learning tasks in our household by making them fun. When everyone is having fun, we almost forget that we are learning at the same time and that is the best way to learn in my books.

So with back to school, one of the fun learning activities that we have been doing is working through the Barron’s Train Your Brain series of books. If you like challenging and fun puzzles, these books are for you.

My Little One and I love to do puzzles together. We like to talk through them together and figure them out. It is fun mom and me learning time. We often do these type of puzzle challenges before bedtime as part of our reading routine.

The Barron’s Train Your Brain series is comprised of three books: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced.

Authors: Robert Allen, Harold Gale, and Carolyn Skitt

train-your-brain-brain-bending-challenges-3

Train your Brain: Brain-Bending Challenges
Intermediate
Authors: Robert Allen, Harold Gale, and Carolyn Skitt
Paperback / 96 Pages / 5 7/8 X 9 / 2014

train-your-brain-super-tricky-teasers-3

Train Your Brain: Super Tricky Teasers
Expert
Authors: Robert Allen, Harold Gale, and Carolyn Skitt
Paperback / 96 Pages / 5 7/8 X 9 / 2014

All three Train Your Brain books are designed by three puzzle-book pros and long-time Mensa workers, this mind-twisting book is jam packed with almost 100 pages of puzzles—from number stumpers and visual teasers to verbal tests. Kids will find themselves stuck, stumped, and thoroughly challenged as they flex their brain muscles. (Ages 8 and older)

My Little One and I have been working on puzzles from all three books. There is definitely a difference it difficulty between the three books and I recommend that you start with the beginner book and build your way up.

Don’t worry either as the answers are all at the back of the book so if you get a little stuck, you can take a peek for a hint in the right direction or to check your answers when you think you have solved the puzzle.

There are all different types of problems that involve letters, numbers, shapes, and more.

I also recommend that you get a pad of paper and pencil and solve the problems on the pad and not in the books. After all, the puzzles are fun and you will likely find yourself returning to some to see if you remember the answer or can solve them again.

The books are recommended for ages 8 years old and up. You can do these books with younger children, such as my 7 year old, but it will likely have to give them a hand with the puzzles or answering a few questions.

I find that the puzzles in the Train Your Brain books are a great brain workout for kids. You might find yourself just having to think your way through them as well.

I have always loved puzzle books and I often purchase them for myself. So it really is not a surprise that I totally love the Train Your Brain series from Barron’s. I completely recommend that you check them out.

At almost 100 pages of puzzle fun and under $10 a book, these are a great and fun way to build those brain muscles. 🙂
