5 Practical Tips to Start College the Right Way

December 8, 2025 By MomMomOnTheGo

College is supposed to be a time where you discover who you’ll become as a person while laying the foundation for your future career. When you’re about to start college, though, it’s natural to be a mix of nervous and excited. It’ll be a brand new experience for you, after all.

Thankfully, this doesn’t need to be nearly as overwhelming as you could think. Focusing on a few tips could help you kickstart your college life faster than you’d think. A few of these will be more than worth it long-term, with five of them standing out.

Go to All Orientations

There’ll be more than a few college orientations you could go for, and you might’ve been to a few already. Since many of these could be optional, though, you might consider skipping the rest of them. That mightn’t be the best approach to take. Even if the other orientations cover similar areas, you can always end up learning a few things you’ll need to know anyway.

Get Some Furniture for Your Dorm

If you’ll be staying in a dorm during the college year, this should come with the basic furniture. But, you could want a little more. It’s worth getting this sorted relatively early so you can make sure your dorm room is as comfortable as possible. Thankfully, you can get student housing furniture relatively easily, and this shouldn’t have to be as expensive as you’d think.

Find the Perfect Place to Study

Speaking of your dorm room, this can be a great place to study, but you could always want a change of scenery every once in a while. It’s worth taking the time to find the best place on campus for you to study. This can vary from person to person, but there are plenty of options for this. Whether it’s in a cozy corner in the library or in the campus coffee shop, find the best place for you.

Get to Know Your Academic Advisor

Most colleges have academic advisors available for their students, and you’ll usually be informed of who yours is when you first start. It could be worth getting to know them or booking an appointment early in case you have any major questions. At a minimum, it’s worth knowing exactly who they are in case you need to speak with them.

Take Advantage of Resources

Speaking of your academic advisor, they could be just one of the potential resources on-campus you can take advantage of. Look into these as early as possible so you can actually use them. Learning labs, study groups, and other resources can be some of the more notable of these, and they’ll make your academic life a whole lot easier.

It’s natural to be nervous and excited when you’re about to start college. But, this doesn’t need to be as overwhelming of an experience as you could think. By focusing on a few areas and taking advantage of a few tips, there’s no reason why it shouldn’t be great.
