Carpet vs Hardwood Floors

Carpet vs Hardwood Floors

September 22, 2015 By MomMomOnTheGo

Advantages and disadvantages of carpet vs. hardwood flooring in a family home

When designing or renovating a family home, and deciding on the look and feel you want, it pays to start at the bottom. Your floor is the most used surface in any house, especially busy family homes.

Before you decide on a style, there is a fundamental decision to be made about what material to use. While there is a wide selection to choose from, two of the most popular are carpet and hardwood, and there are advantages and disadvantages to each.

The advantages

Carpets are and always have been a popular choice. This is mainly due to their aesthetics as they provide warmth and comfort underfoot, which makes them ideal for bedrooms and other areas that benefit from a softer feel and appearance. They also come in a wide range of styles and appearances, which means it is easy to find something to match the look and feel you are aiming for when decorating your home.

On the other hand, hardwood flooring has becoming increasingly popular due to many people preferring its appearance, practicality and cleanliness. It is naturally hard-wearing and in some ways easier to clean and maintain than carpet.

Both materials have a lot of advantages, so in order to make a decision, it can be helpful to consider the drawbacks as well.

The disadvantages

Carpets take longer to clean, particularly if you want to do it thoroughly. Thorough cleaning is important, not only from the point of view of maintaining appearances, but it is also crucial to minimize dust and other factors that can aggravate allergies. Homeowners, particularly those with children who may be susceptible to conditions such as asthma and dust or pet allergies, should consider consulting and enlisting the help of a professional cleaning company who specializes in Carpet Cleaning services to make sure that their floor is kept in the best possible condition.

While hardwood flooring does not attract dust and dirt in the same way that carpet does, it still requires regular attention, such as polishing and waxing, to maintain it. Otherwise, it can degrade and quickly develop an unattractive run-down appearance that is far from easy to repair. It can also appear cold and uninviting, and is not always practical, especially for families with young children who are learning to walk, for example.

An important decision

Given how often you and your family will use the floor, the right material to choose is not a decision to be taken lightly. There are practical considerations, including some with health and safety implications, as well as the fact that the look and feel of your floor will in many ways define the look and feel of your home. Although it is easy to overlook your flooring, it is important to consider all aspects, from its appearance to its use and ongoing maintenance, before deciding what is the right option for you.
