Success of Lifebites organic snacks becomes an incubator
for emerging specialty food companiesNorth Vancouver, B.C. – Adam Dodds and a friend Rob Christy were on a lunch break while doing garden work when Rob kept going on about the snack his wife had made him the night before. It was dried banana pieces covered with cacao powder – the purist form of chocolate available.
In the days following, Adam and his wife Suengmi Jin began experimenting with various ingredients in their home kitchen. The delicious morsels knocked everyone’s socks off and Lifebites was born.
Since 2011, the company has grown to occupy space in a North Vancouver warehouse providing their packaged chocolate-covered dried banana snacks sprinkled with either coconut or hemp seeds to a growing number of major food stores and retailers.
Early success with sell outs at farmers markets led to food shows and a growing list of customers. The business grew and now Lifebites are found in grocery chain stores including Whole Foods and Save-On.
Lately, their head office, affectionately known as The Shop, has become an incubator for other entrepreneurs creating organic specialty food products.
Adam and Suengmi Jin with long-time friends Rob Christy and marketing director Paul Verge rent space in their warehouse and collaborate with other startups helping them to get started, with food safety compliance and marketing. In many cases, they share their customers by supplying non competing organic specialty products.
The current five companies at The Shop are:
Adam Dodds, Suengmi Jin, Rob Christy and Paul Verge with Lifebites create delicious and nutritious organic snacks consisting of chocolate covered dried banana sprinkled with coconut or hemp seeds that are dairy free
Julie Aubin of Zenorganics Inc. makes powerful Macha tea filled with antioxidants and is rich in fiber
Tiffany Shen of Lost Cairn Ventures Ltd. specializes in making a nutritious gluten free high protein and fiber breakfast cereal called Kapow Now! She also does catering tailored to mountain expeditions
Catherine Meiklejohn specializes in freshly baked gluten free specialties as a tasty, healthy alternative to food containing processed oils and refined sugar
Henry and Lech Dziedziejko make moringa Oleifera – a papaya salad made with fermented coconut nectar to promote healthy digestion
The Lower Mainland has become a centre for craft beer and local food products. But there is a growing appetite for healthy organic specialty foods that are nutritious, non-allergenic and fun.
I was curious about all the talk when it came to Lifebites so MomMomOnTheGo and crew tested out the Lifebites Dark Chocolate & Hemp Covered Chewy Dehydrated Banana Snack.
