I recently had the opportunity to try out LunchSkins reusable sandwich and snack bags. “Try out” is an understatement too because I do not think we have stopped using them since the moment we received them.
It makes me feel great every time we use a LunchSkins instead of a plastic bag or plastic wrap. Litterless Lunch days at school became a snap when we received our LunchSkins.
If you are not familiar with LunchSkins, they are reusable Sub ($10.95), Sandwich ($8.95) & Snack ($7.85) bags. The best things about LunchSkins are that they are dishwasher-safe and according to LunchSkins, they are made out of a high quality food-safe fabric, used by professional bakers.
I was wondering if they would be hard to wash, but they are actually very easy to wash. They can easily be cleaned in the dishwasher and do not take up much space at all. They are also quick and easy to hand wash if you prefer to hand wash them.
The Velcro that closes the reusable bags can, like any Velcro, gather lint or anything that will stick in the Velcro. I can easily keep it clean by rubbing the Velcro with my finger, nail or a dish washing brush.
With a Velcro enclosure there are little openings in the corners so if something can be squashed and turned into crumbs or liquid then it can leak out. It is not a zip enclosure like a plastic bag. So if there are grapes or oranges in the snack bags and your little one squashes them in their bag the juice can leak out the corners of the snack bag. Crumbs can sneak out as well too. Having said all that, without a totally Ziploc type style bag, there is just not a way to make the reusable bags entirely leak proof. Also, it does take a lot to make the bags leak. In order to have it happen I myself had to simulate the experience as if someone really squashed the items in the bags. This is also not something that would deter me from purchasing more of the reusable bags.
The benefit is the positive impact you are having on the environment every time you choose to use a reusable snack, lunch or sub LunchSkins instead of a plastic bag that will fill up the landfill.
