I love it when I find a new coffee to test out because well, I love coffee. I was pretty excited to test out the latest coffee that came into our house as I have a special attachment to the company, Second Cup. You see, one of my first jobs as a kid was at the local Second Cup. I loved that job. I remember making decaffeinated chocolate raspberry coffee the minute I arrived at work because it was my favorite. I was a decaf girl back then because after all, I was only 16. 🙂
Those days working in Second Cup grew my love for coffee and to this day, I still love coffee. With the new Batch49 coffee from Second Cup, I just knew that I had to try it out.
Batch49 offers the ultimate coffee experience: it’s authentic, it’s artisanal, and it’s expertly sourced. Available in both a Medium and a Dark Roast, this limited edition blend might be the best coffee roasted above the 49th Parallel. Using only the finest-quality specialty grade Arabica beans grown at a high-altitude, Batch49 is a blend of South American & East African beans that we artfully roast in small batches to guarantee a premium product.
Our Medium blend is complex & wonderfully bright with berry sweetness, while our Dark blend has elegant & subtly sweet berry notes with a hint of cocoa; flavour profiles perfect for serving both hot and cold. Unlike commodity coffees, you can taste the exceptional quality in Batch49. With superior quality being our focus, not only is this blend delicious, but it’s also Rainforest Alliance Certified™.
Better sourcing, better roasting and better brewing.
Batch49 is awesome. It does not have a bitter taste at all and feels smooth when sipping it. I have to express how much the lack of bitter taste is to me in coffee. I hate bitter coffee or coffee that leaves a horrible after taste. Batch49 was 100% not bitter and I not only loved the quality and taste while drinking it, but I did not have a horrible after taste like I get with bitter coffees.
As a mom, I consider myself an expert on cold coffee as well because after all, how often do I get to finish my cup of coffee before it turns cold! Moms you know what I am talking about here. 🙂
What I can tell you is that I agree that Batch49 is wonderful both hot and cold, but honestly, I really like having my coffee hot. I actually like being able to have the first cup in peace before everyone wakes up.

Second Cup Coffee Co. Encourages Canadians to
Choose Better, Not BitterSecond Cup Coffee is Second to None:
Second Cup takes its coffee to even higher levels of excellence by examining and improving every step of the coffee process from farm to cupSecond Cup Coffee Co. is calling on all Canadians to “Break from Bitter.” In a recent national survey,* the vast majority of Canadians (almost 75%) say a day without bitterness would be a better day, and it all starts with our morning coffee. Of the coffee drinkers surveyed, more than seven in ten reveal they are negatively impacted when they start their day with a bitter cup of coffee, with 5% of respondents actually saying it ruins their entire day! And we just can’t let it go with nearly a quarter of Canadian coffee drinkers admitting that they will spend more time and money to get a better cup of coffee if they’re served a bitter brew. Second Cup understands this bitter truth and has examined and improved every aspect of its coffee process, from farm to cup, to create the most exceptional tasting coffee offering in Canada – It’s Better, Not Bitter!
Second Cup has made uncompromising improvements to sourcing, blending, roasting and tasting. It has also engaged the passion and talents of some of the world’s most knowledgeable coffee experts to create truly exceptional Second Cup coffees that are Second to None. The complete offering of best-ever coffees is available now in Second Cup Coffee Co. cafés across the country.
“We believe coffee lovers deserve the best tasting coffee,” says Chris Sonnen, Coffee Expert and Vice President, Coffee Experience, Second Cup Coffee Co. “Some people believe that coffee should taste harsh and bitter, but in reality, bitter coffee has been abused or burnt. This misconception leaves a really bad taste in my mouth, and as Canada’s only national specialty coffee company, Second Cup is on a mission to ban the bitter in coffee cups across the nation. We are encouraging Canadians to choose better, not bitter.”
Quality Coffee to the Core
Second Cup Coffee Co. has always been known for excellent coffee, and as part of the company’s elevated commitment to quality and innovation, Second Cup is now taking its coffee obsession to even higher levels. Every single coffee offering at Second Cup – more than 18 varieties and blends – has been evaluated to ensure it is delivering the very best to customers. The attention to detail at every stage of the Second Cup coffee journey is exceptional and hinges on three key factors:· The Best Sourcing: Second Cup selects from the top 1 – 2% of the world’s production of coffee; the best quality 100% Specialty Grade Arabica beans. Because of its nimble size, Second Cup is able to access smaller farms and bring unique coffees to Canada. Second Cup has also developed long-term relationships with the finest coffee growers and mills around the world who share the company’s commitment to sustainable practices for the land and the people who work on the farms. 100% of Second Cup coffee in café is certified by third parties to be socially and environmentally responsible.
· The Best Roasting: Second Cup has shifted to small batch roasting, working with an award-winning Canadian specialty roaster. Second Cup’s artisanal approach to roasting takes more time and care, and creates a better tasting coffee as it develops and enhances all the flavour notes of every bean. Each and every roast is tasted by Second Cup Coffee Expert, Chris Sonnen, and tested to unwavering standards, created specifically for that coffee. The perfectly roasted beans are freshly-ground every time and are brewed to exact specifications in cafés.
· The Best People: Second Cup is home to two of the best Coffee Experts in the business: Alton McEwen and Chris Sonnen. Mr. McEwen is a member of the Second Cup Board of Directors and has been a long-time leader in the specialty coffee sector as a buyer, taster, selector, roaster and even a grower. He has travelled the world visiting the finest coffee farms and cafés, working with the most progressive coffee innovators throughout his career. Chris Sonnen brings his extensive hands-on experience and unrivalled passion for the ultimate brew to Second Cup. Together, these coffee experts have turned Second Cup upside down in the quest to create the perfect coffees for customers to enjoy and love.
“By working hand-in-hand with our best-in-class Canadian roasting partner, we ensure Second Cup coffee is complex, elegant, and perfect every time, without the bitterness,” says Sonnen. “I am thrilled with the results from our coffee revolution and am confident that Second Cup offers the best coffee in Canada.
