When you’ve just moved into a new house it can feel like there is a never-ending list of things that need to get done. So how do you decide what needs to get done first? While it might be tempting to put pictures on the wall and sort out the fun, aesthetic side of things, there are actually much more pressing things that you should sort out. The more physical, structural aspects of your home are more important than the decor as if anything happens to those, you are in much bigger trouble! In this article we take a look at the first jobs you need to do when moving house.
Sort any vital building issues
The first thing you need to do when you move is to sort any vital building issues. If you don’t, these can wreak more havoc in the long-term, such as causing leaks or structural damage that can hurt both the house itself and the people living in it. Look at experts for things like a new roof or to sort any structural damage as they will know the best way to get this fixed and sorted in no time at all. It might feel like an annoying upfront cost, but it’s important to do it right away.
Organize all your bills and mail
The next thing you need to do is sort your bills and mail. You don’t want to get into an overdraft or miss a payment because letters were sent to the wrong address. Instead, make sure you notify everyone from the water companies, to any accounts you hold for businesses to let them know your change of address. By getting this done quickly you don’t need to worry about anything being late. Life admin tasks like this can take time but it’s so worth it when it’s finished!
Give it a deep clean
Before you start unpacking boxes or arranging furniture, make sure your new home gets a thorough deep clean. Even if the previous owners or tenants left it tidy, a fresh clean ensures every surface is spotless and ready for you to settle in comfortably. Focus on high-traffic areas like the kitchen and bathroom, sanitising worktops, cupboards, and appliances before you use them. Wipe down skirting boards, door handles, and light switches, and don’t forget hidden spots like behind radiators and inside wardrobes. It’s also worth steam-cleaning carpets or mopping hard floors. Nothing makes a place feel truly yours like that just-cleaned freshness!
These are the first things you need to do when moving house in order to make it a safe, comfortable and homey living space going forward. There can feel like a lot to take in, but when you tackle it right from the off and put it into strategic lists it can soon feel a lot easier to manage.
